Collecting accurate three-dimensional data inside tunnels, culverts, tanks, pipe galleries, underground facilities, and other confined spaces is rarely straightforward. These environments may be narrow, dark, difficult to reach, or unsafe for personnel, while conventional aerial platforms can be vulnerable to collisions when operating close to walls, ceilings, pipes, and structural obstacles.
To make aerial mapping more practical in these challenging environments, Foxtech Robotics is introducing SLAM X1, a collision-protected flying 3D LiDAR scanning system designed for the DJI Matrice 4T and Matrice 4E flight platforms.
Combining SLAM-based scanning, a compact structure, full-coverage collision protection, built-in illumination, a global-shutter image sensor, real-time point cloud preview, and resume-scanning capability, SLAM X1 enables operators to capture three-dimensional data in spaces where conventional surveying methods may be difficult, inefficient, or risky.
Confined-space mapping creates several problems at the same time. GNSS signals may be weak or completely unavailable. Passageways can be too narrow for larger aircraft. Low lighting makes navigation and visual documentation more difficult, and complex structures increase the risk of contact with surrounding surfaces.
Sending personnel into these environments may also require additional safety procedures, specialized equipment, or temporary shutdowns. In emergency or unknown spaces, the internal conditions may not even be fully understood before the survey begins.
SLAM X1 is designed to move the data-collection platform into the space while helping the operator remain at a safer distance. Mounted on a compatible DJI Matrice 4T or 4E, the system can fly through restricted areas and generate point cloud data as the mission progresses.
Flying inside a tunnel or tank is very different from operating in open air. The aircraft may need to pass close to walls, ceilings, beams, pipes, and other obstacles, leaving little room for flight-path errors.
SLAM X1 uses a full-coverage anti-collision frame to help protect the scanning system during close-range operation. The protective structure reduces the risk of direct contact with surrounding surfaces and makes the platform more suitable for tunnels, culverts, storage tanks, underground rooms, and other restricted environments.
Its compact design also helps the system pass through narrow openings and reach areas that may be difficult or unsafe for survey personnel to access directly.
SLAM X1 is developed specifically for the DJI Matrice 4T and Matrice 4E flight platforms. This allows users who already operate compatible M4-series aircraft to add confined-space 3D scanning without adopting an entirely separate aerial platform.
The combination brings DJI’s compact enterprise aircraft into a specialized SLAM mapping workflow, supporting both indoor and outdoor data collection across industrial inspection, underground surveying, emergency exploration, and infrastructure documentation projects.
The DJI Matrice 4T or Matrice 4E aircraft is not included with the SLAM X1 purchase.
SLAM X1 provides a scanning frequency of 200,000 points per second and supports scanning accuracy of up to 1 cm. Its 360° × 59° scanning field of view enables the system to collect surrounding structural information while moving through the environment.
The scanning radius reaches:
These capabilities allow the system to document walls, ceilings, floors, pipelines, equipment, and structural features within a unified three-dimensional dataset.
For engineers, surveyors, facility managers, and rescue teams, the resulting point cloud can provide a clearer understanding of space geometry than conventional video alone.
One common challenge in mobile scanning is determining whether enough data has been collected before leaving the site. If operators cannot see the scanning result in the field, missing areas may only become apparent during later processing.
SLAM X1 allows operators to preview point cloud data directly on the controller during the mission. The real-time display helps users monitor the surrounding environment, review scanning coverage, and adjust the flight path while the aircraft is still inside the target area.
This immediate feedback can reduce uncertainty during fieldwork and helps operators identify areas that may require an additional pass.
Geometric point clouds provide important spatial information, but color can make complex scenes easier to recognize and interpret.
SLAM X1 supports real-time colorized point cloud output using its global-shutter image sensor. The resulting data combines spatial structure with realistic color information and uniform point density, helping operators distinguish surfaces, equipment, pipes, openings, and other environmental features more quickly.
This can be valuable for on-site analysis, remote collaboration, structural documentation, and later inspection review.
Large or complex environments may not be completed within a single uninterrupted flight. A battery replacement, temporary obstruction, or mission pause can divide a project into multiple scanning sessions.
With some workflows, these separate datasets must be manually aligned and stitched together, adding processing time and increasing the possibility of registration errors.
SLAM X1 supports resume scanning after a battery replacement or temporary stop. The system can automatically register the continued scan with the existing dataset, reducing the need for manual re-stitching and making multi-stage data collection more efficient.
This feature is particularly useful for long tunnels, extended underground spaces, large tanks, and complicated facilities that require multiple flights.
Underground passages, enclosed tanks, culverts, and industrial pipe galleries often have limited or no permanent lighting. Although LiDAR can collect geometric data without relying on visible light, operators still need sufficient visual information to understand the flight environment and capture useful color imagery.
SLAM X1 includes controllable front illumination to improve visibility in low-light and dark conditions. This supports clearer visual feedback during flight and helps the image sensor record the scene for colorized point cloud generation.
When scan data needs to be connected to a known coordinate system or reference plane, control points become an important part of the workflow.
SLAM X1 includes a laser control point function for non-contact point marking and position recording. These recorded points can support subsequent coordinate transformation and reference-plane positioning without requiring the operator to physically place markers in difficult-to-reach areas.
This is especially helpful when working inside restricted or hazardous spaces where direct access is limited.
SLAM X1 is designed for applications including:
In routine inspection projects, the system can help teams document internal structures and create reusable 3D records. In emergency situations, it can provide spatial information before personnel enter an uncertain environment.
The main challenge of confined-space mapping is not simply achieving high point density. A practical system must also reach the target area, withstand close-range operating conditions, provide useful feedback during the mission, and support efficient processing afterward.
SLAM X1 brings these requirements together in a compact aerial system. Its protective frame helps reduce collision risks, real-time preview supports better flight decisions, colorized point clouds improve scene recognition, and resume scanning simplifies projects that require multiple flights.
For teams already using DJI Matrice 4T or Matrice 4E platforms, SLAM X1 provides a new way to extend aerial operations into tunnels, tanks, pipe galleries, underground facilities, and other spaces that are difficult to survey from the ground.
By moving the scanner into the environment while keeping operators at a safer distance, SLAM X1 turns hard-to-access spaces into measurable, reviewable, and reusable three-dimensional data.
